Well, i have had my gerbils (Detective Noodles (DEH) and General Bob (Nutmeg)) for about a week and just now i am reading about mites in thier food. Im just wondering what are ways to avoid them and how common are they (i live in Maine if that makes a difference). I have heard of freezing thier food but we have very limited freezer space and i cant fit food in there. So what are some other ways of preventing mites, Thanks for any help!

Always buy sealed food Always check the packaging Once open always keep in a cool place in an airtight (and insect proof) container.
When you buy food make sure the shop has good levels of cleanliness, if the shop looks grotty its storeroom is probably worse.
