Hi,
Anyone got any ideas of what I could give my gerbils as a christmassy treat? I was planning on giving them some crispbread with a raisin squashed on top, but it's not THAT christmassy....

According to the new book on gerbil care by Donna Anastasi, you can feed your gerbils, as a treat, Almonds, raw or cooked Oatmeal, cooked sweet potato, popped plain popcorn, Kashi or Puffed Kashi cereal, Cherrios, Corn Flakes, Banana, and a few other items. Of course, for the cooked items, do not add sugar or anything else. The cooking is basically to get the flavor out and make it soft. And, you can give them fruits too like apples, grapes, pears. Since fruit has a lot of water, its best just to give them a little since it can cause diarrhea if they have too much. Of course, wash all the fruit really well. You can try cooked oatmeal with raisins for your christmas treat with a small side of sweet potato. Merry Christmas!

Just remember not too much, gerbisl don't require very mych liquid in their diets. A little porridge would be OK, but I wouldn't go more than 1/2 tsp per gerbil.

and stay away from the instant stuff... it's loaded with sugar! Must be different over there then - ready brek, and the store brands here have no added sugar (unless you get the flavored ones)

Make sure you let it sit! Im sure the gerbils won't mind it if it's cold, but when we made oatmeal for the horses, we had to let it sit to it would swell all the way.... it takes longer than you think. If a horse could choke on it, I'd hate to see a gerbil do it. I've never seen a gerbil caugh (can they??? hum...)
