Hi All I notice that some of you feed your gerbs cat food, dog biscuits, mealworms etc. Is this really necessary or just a treat If they would benefit from some protein how often and how much should they have and of what exactly? Thanks Caroline

Well gerbils are omnivorous, just like us so in the wild it would be normal for them to eat insects. With the ready mixed food that we tend to buy the protein tends to be added already but you may wish to add extra protein for youngsters or pregnant/nursing mothers. If you're mixing your own then you'll need to add extra protein and meal worms or crickets can be great treats, I'm not sure I could watch though .

The levels of protein required by gerbils varies. Growing pups and prenant/nursing mums need more, elderly gerbils needs less. Do a search and you'll find a number of past posts on the subject. As you may have noticed the feeds used on the forum vary in composition and therefore adjustments are made for individual needs. Too much protein is also not good for gerbils though.

They don't make a "gerbil" feed here, but Hamster/Gerbils mixes. So I have to add the protine (cat food) to my mixes.
In the wild gerbils would eat seeds/plants/bugs
