I used to feed my gerbils KayTee Fiesta, but don't feed anything made by KayTee anymore. They use Ethoxyquin, which has been linked to cancer and other problems in dogs, as a preservative in most, if not all, of their foods and treats. I switched to Gerri Gerbil.

Check this link out. I've been feeding Kaytee Exact for nearly a year, and we just had 7 birthdays at our place. 6 of them were pups pairs that I had, whom had been eating Kaytee Exact. The other was from Sandy. I've never experienced anything.... and I know that my gerbils LOVE it... and half the time they choose that over their seed portion of their food. www.spoiledratten.com/ethoxyquin.html

I'm not a chemist, scientist, or researcher, so I don't feel qualified to debate the effects of long-term feeding of Ethoxyquin. When I was corresponding with the rescue about adopting my first two boys, the person in charge of gerbil adoptions encouraged me to switch from feeding KayTee Fiesta to Gerri Gerbil because of KayTee's use of Ethoxyquin as a preservative in their foods. Since I was already using Gerri as a supplemental food, changing over to it wasn't a huge problem. I will say that the gerbils who were previously getting Fiesta seem to have preferred it over Gerri Gerbil, but since there have been some concerns over Ethoxyquin, it's one of those "Better safe than sorry." situations for me.
