Does anyone make their own gerbil food, if so what is in it? I am trying to get the best food for my gerbils and am beginning to think that making my own is the best way to go.

'Wow'! that's a gourmet meal! Do you just use dried veggies from the supermarket Andrea? Caroline They do sell these little packages in the bird section filled with differnet nuts, seeds and dried veggies & fruit. They used to be $1 a package but have gone up quite a bit, so I don't buy them as much as i used to. What i do now is buy what I can bulk at the supermarket, so like diced almonds/walnuts and dehydrated soup veggies and such. Then I'll buy a bag of saflower and rasins and stuff. Oh and I buy a bag of Cat food, it seems they no longer give out 'samples', as i used to get all the cat food free that way. Mix it together with a millet type base and a bag of ecotrition and maybe something else and i have a gormet meal for spoiled gerbils!

tehehe! And I thought my gerbils had it pretty good! I feed 25+ little mouthes.... The main gerbil food is Natures Cafe Hamster/Gerbil food (it's a seed mixture) and Kaytee Exact. After that, I add my own stuff.... white rice, oat meal, Rice crispies cereal, alfalfa/tymathoy hay. And then when ever somebody gives me gerbils, I get the food, so that gets mixed in... and when things are on sale. I got 3lbs of mouse/rat food for about $2... it was under 3 I know for sure, so that got mixed in (My mice eat this gerbil stuff too) What ever is on sale! However, I did notice yesterday while brousing at PetCo... they sell Kaytee Exact in the bulk section. THey Do NOT sell it in bags... but my bag was 27oz and it was $5 and change, before taxes. If there's 16oz in 1lb, then that's less than 2lbs, and in the bulk food, it's $1.99 a lb..... hum.... I think I've been getting stiffed!

Went to our local health food shop and bought:- Unsweetened Coconut shavings, blueberries, cranberries, pineapple, papaya etc. plus walnuts and almond slivers and dried mixed veg. Chopped it all up into little bits and have mixed it into their regular gerby food and WOW! they are really enjoying it! ;D I also add fresh fruit/veg every couple of days - carrot, cauliflower, broccoli, apple, banana, cucumber, tomato etc. I think the best thing is the Pedigree DentaRask though!!!!! (Dental dog thingy) I've had one in the tank for nearly 2 weeks and it's nearly all gone - they love it! ;D It's so hard it must be good for keeping their teeth in trim. Thanks for the tips Andrea!
