Hi Robyn,
All of my gerbils are able to jump/climb out of their playpen when they get bored. I sit on the floor and watch them so i can catch the escapee.
I can normally tell when they're gonna do it so i can manuvre myself into the area they're in.
However, i do think my lot are a bit thick at times because they always jump out of the pen and on to me. I like to think the just want a cuddle with their mum.
Do you put any toys and food in for them to play with?

If the gerbils escaping is becoming a problem, I'd suggest switching to a different kind of play area. I use a big, deep plastic bin. The gerbils can't climb the sides, and it doubles as a giant sand-bath.

or a bath tub if you have one Make sure its clean, and dry, and then put the plug in. A dry bath tub means you can sit in with them and let them crawl over you
