I find it hard to fit a lot of things in my gerbils' 10-gallon tank, so let's think of some small ideas! -Hang exercise wheel from lid -Small wooden house -Kleenex box Come on, brainstorm!

Sometimes I put a coconut shell in there, a tin can for a bathroom, cardboard of course, but it will be tight!

can't forget the toilet paper rolls. maybe instead of the kleenex box, how about trying something smaller like a gum box or something?

Right now I have 3 younger males in a 10 gallon. In it i have 2 wheels, Wood house, large cardboard tube, then there dish and water bottle (and a toilet paper tube, but it won't last much longer.. lol). I think it depends on "how" you set up the tank, all my peices are towards the walls so there still is alot of floor space. Now these guy's won't be living in this forever, it's a good size since there still babies, but i'm building on to it to make it larger.

I use pizza lids, and I fold them up and make a little "wall" in the tank. I cut a spot in it, and stick in a tube. Then I either stick their bed in the little side, or I cram it with cardboard.... and they make their bed with it. I also hang my wheel.... and I taped some tubes to the glass so they'd have to jump up to get into it. They liked it! I'd have used wire ties for a better hold, but I was out, so tape was all I had. I also have some rocks, and I put a piece of wood over it and they like to go under it! ;D

One thing gerbils LOVE is having a square glass jam jar in there. They think it's a tunnel, and dig, dig dig. They also sleep in there because it's warm. Then I'd go with lots of small boxes from your recycling pile and lots of toilet paper rolls. Get family and friends to save them up for you!
You can wire your wheel to the lid of your tank, so it doesn't take up a lot of space and so it doesn't get knocked over.

What I did with my 10 gallon tanks is I connected two of them together. One is to be used as their "home" and the other one is their playground. I made a second story playground for Billy and Bobby, (see other thread for pics) but I'm not able to afford to buy the wire mesh right now for the rest of my gerbies. Billy and Bobby are having a blast in their playground. They are the only ones still living in their 20 gallon tank. In the playground, I have sand, a wheel (which they all use now), wooden chew toys, food and water, and a few have little houses. Here are a few pics of the set up and such: Looks like all the gerbs are having fun now. ;D

I have a smaller 10 gallon tank that I could possibly connect to the one that my gerbils use now. Which of those SAM/Habitrail things should I buy?

Well Gerbilicious, I just used those plastic connecting tubes to connect the tanks together. I;m not a huge fan of them cuz some of my gerbils like to chew on the inside of them while my girls like to pee in it. As for the lid, the plastic ones I have on four of my tanks I had special ordered from a pet shop by my work (not a commercial chain pet shop). And the other two lids are wire mesh and we simply cut a round hole in it to accomadate the tubes to connect the tanks.
I hope this helps. ;D

You can also use an aluminium (sp) dryer hose too. There's a pict of it in a thread some place.... Think it was Queenofthenile.... I put a "high rise" on my 10gal. It was nearly $40. I was hesitant, but I couldn't figure out how to build my own top without sharp wire ends.... and I'm working with TIGHT spaces. I have 5 girls in there, so they needed more room! Plus my boyfriend has one for his rat, so he kept insisting that I "HAVE" to get one too! They love it. They run up and down the ramps all the time. Later on when the next litter is ready I'll probably get another high rise if I chose to keep some of the boys. (I have 3 boys (4, but one's becoming a daddy) and so 3 isn't enough to justify a $40 purchase)

I like those cage topppers. But I'm not a big fan of the price. Do your gerbies enjoy the second floor?

Does that second floor thing only fit a 10-gallon tank?
Also, how do you get your gerbies out to hold them and play with them? Can they just run to the bottom level and hide?
