Last night my gerbils were at it for like 3 hours. And after each mount, they BOTH would clean themselves off.. I didn't watch them for 3 hours, I was online and just noticed. But that thumping and chasing thing definitly went on for 3hours. Not sure about how many times they cleaned themselves. I thought when they both did cleaned themselves off , that meant it was over and she was pregnant? But yeah guess not because it happened a few more times. Then they finally stopped and slept after about 3 hours. I thought it lasted only 2? lol An hour later after that, they were at it again. But the few times I saw them, the female seemed annoyed with him 1 second, and not the next....That normal? Could they mate like that and her not be pregnant? Haven't seem them do anything today so guessing maybe she is.

Mating can go on all night! The male cleans his sexual organs after each penetration, but the female only when an ejaculation has occurred. She is not emmediately pregnant, because the fertilisation occurs inside and the ovum must become implanted in the wall of the uterus. This means that even after ejaculation, she will not be pregnant at once. So the behaviour you've watched them doing, is completely normal! ;D

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up then lol. Guess i got the wrong info from somewhere. I thought the male only had to have 1 ejaculation and then they would stop. Female cleaned herself a few times. Ok its been 2 days. Pregnant yet I want babies lol

Update 17 days later..lol.. I cleaned out the tank the other day (they were in a temp cage for a couple weeks) and I really think she is pregnant. She is sleeping a lot more, NOT chewing things as much(a papertowel roll lasted a day) and her stomach feels kind of hard. She's also having trouble jumping and stuff. STill active and running around though if I let her out. So anyway I cleaned the tank and set it up. ANd she knew she was back in the tank (not the cage) so she was kind of looking a litle lost because she couldn't find the habitrail tubes. She kept trying to climb and jump to the cover. She was geting all stressed and I was afraid she'd hurt herself because she was falling.. I put the tubes and connected it to the tiny travel cage she likes(small kritter keeper). The tubes connected ONLY go UP. No sidway connections in the cages. Would this be a bad thing or a good thing if she decides to have the pups in that tiny cage? I know she would feel more secure, but how safe is it? She's having trouble jumping and falling sometimes, but hitting her head on the tank is probably worse.. She had plenty of hiding places and stuff in the tank, that wasn't the problem. I think I'm gonna take out all the carboard tubes and tissue boxes cause she's doing that thing where she runs and hides everytime I get near the tank. =/

It seems to be that she is indeed very pregnant! ;D
I'm not sure how it exacly looks like, but can the pups fall down if they are in there? Than the mother would have difficulties with retrieving the pups.
And when the pups start to walk around, I think they will not be able to climb back again by themselves! Don't you think?
Maybe it is better to remove it, so she can get used to it before she will give birth!
About the small size, if she thinks that the place is too small for her and here pups, she will move to another place in the tank/cage.

lol it looked like this. She was making a nice big nest in the little cage. Pups wouldn't be able to get in or out. I first thought once they started walking I could add easier tubes that they would be able to get in and out of..but guess not So I took it off and put some new stuff in the tank and taped them to the bottom so she can't move them around. I also put a towel over half the tank...helped a lot. She's mostly staying in that part.

Just leave the male in with her. He helps keep the litter warm when they are born. I think she looks normal for being pregnant. She is 19-20 days pregnant now right? My girl always looks like she is ready to explode! I could always tell at about 17 days. Only 4-8 days to wait ;D.
