From personal experiance we have found that carefresh is much better than wood shavings, we lost a few pups when the gerbs were on wood shavings and i have noticed that after a long day at a show on wood shaivings all our gerbs come home with sore noses..
I would say that carefresh is definatly better than wood shavings but not as good as megazorb which is what we use now.

Some breeders say that Carefresh indeed dust and causes red noses or respiratory problems in pups! However, I have always used wood shavings and I have never had any problems! Some breeders recommend Megazorb! I personally don't know it, but maybe it is available in your neighbourhood! Megazorb, is if I'm correct a bedding for horses and has to be bought in bulk. Other things you can try are Corncobs, hemp, little pieces of wood (don't really know how to call it in English), etc.

Are you in the US or canada?
Cause there are 2 different kinds of Carefresh.
Regular and ULTRA.
Go with the Ultra, Petco has it. Ultra Carefresh is much less dusty.

I don't know Carefresh too well, I've heard it's good. I use "CritterCare" and it's fun because they can rip it apart and it flufs up really well! My male loves that stuff because he gets to shred it, and I love it because it keeps him away from shredding his water bottle! DON'T, however, use Kaytee's "Sorbent" bedding. It's great at first, but gets SUPER dusty.

I raised 2 litters on Pine (before I learned the risk), and they both did fine, I then raised 2 litters on Carefresh, and the second litter one of the pups began to click (Respiratory problem), because the carefresh became so dusty even though it was new and clean. Since then I only use corncob with breeding pairs, and no one's ever had the slightest reaction- I believe it's the safest, least dusty bedding here (But here the only choices are pine, cedar, carefresh, aspen or corncob- they don't sell megazorb, Ultra or hemp around my town).
All my other tanks have aspen bedding(are those the little wood pieces you meant?)- which the gerbils LOVE, because they can burrow in it, especially when mixed with alfalfa hay (that hay is GREAT for nursing moms), or Timothy hay.

My adult gerbils were allergic to carefresh so I switched back to Aspen. I have had 3 litters on it and no issues. None of the litters have had a respiratory issue.
Like Peter said Corn Cob is also supposed to be good. I personally have never used it but the breeder I got Squirt from said that is all she uses.
