Hi! I just bought two gerbil a little over a week ago, and they told me they were both boys. After reading a little about sexing gerbils, however, I'm beginning to suspect that one's a girl! I took a picture of his (or her!) underside (he/she didn't like that) and I'd like to post it but I don't know how. Could someone please explain how to post pictures? I'm afraid they're probably pretty close to sexual maturity, and I'm not set up to handle baby gerbils! Please advise! thanks so much, Devun

Hi Devun, and welcome to the forum! How old are your gerbils? If they are older than about 8 weeks and they turn out to be opposite sex, you will need to split them immediately. Here are some links for sexing gerbils, so that you should be able to tell for yourself: A link to my own website - www.gerbilbreeding.com/sexing.htmAnd if you are still confused - www.wagerbils.com/sexinggerbils.html

I think they're about 7 or 8 weeks! I looked at that website already... that's what made me suspect it's a girl. Now I just need confirmation before I have to do something drastic like separate them. They really like each other.

Hey Devun, It's Sweetie. I had a similar experience. It is in a previous thread Dated 8/2 the originator says Peter but it is actually me trying to send to Peter for an answer. I ended up going out to get 2 new young gerbils 10 wks and pairing same sexed gerbils. I had to go get another tank etc. If you got it from a pet store then you can take either one back and get a same sexed gerbil. I couldn't because I got them from a shelter (as you have read). I know havedone research and this Forum has helped me out immensely ;D. I think I might pair them up and breed now. Funny how things happen. I started with two now I have 2 pair and want to breed. Anyways, I hope that my situation has helped you and given you options. Keep us posted and WELCOME to the Forum

OOOPS silly me ;D I forgot to help you figure out how to post pictures!! J actually helped me with it. You need to post your pictures on line (I used http://www.photobucket.com) then Come to the Forum either chose a new thread or reply to an old thread. Then click on the 4th icon in on the second line (the picture) and where the URL is you need to delete URL and copy and paste the photo bucket URL. It is the first line under the picture. Hope thins helps. J Thanks again. Your info is now being passed on again!! There are also websites you can go to in order to get anatomical pictures. Several members have websites. Under Memeber websites or you could go to National Gerbil Society NGS. Are you in the US or in the UK or Canada? Where are you?

thanks a lot for the help... I had to take the male gerbil back and get one of his sisters. I started crying in the middle of the pet store. Anyway, the two sisters were afraid of each other at first, so I did the split cage thing for a while and now they're snuggled up together in their nest! Seems like girl gerbils are friskier than boy gerbils... I miss my little boy though. thanks again...
