That's a female, Devun, you'll need to split them up . Can you return one to the petstore and get another that is the same sex as the one you are keeping? If you don't want to do that you will need to get 2 more gerbils, 1 male and 1 female. Then introduce the new female to your old one, and the new male to your old male.

That's sad. They really like each other... if they are 7 or 8 weeks, will they still be willing to accept a new gerbil? I hear the older they get, the more territorial they are. Also, is neutering a possibility?

They are still very young and should accept new gerbils with very little problem. If you decide to split them up, you should introduce another gerbil using the split-cage method. There is info on it here: www.gerbilbreeding.com/intro.htmThis site is for breeding gerbils, but you follow the same steps for a same-sex pair. I have gotten two of my gerbils neutered. I think personally think it's a good option, but it is hard to find a vet that will do it. It is also quite expensive, $90 Can where I live. If you want to learn more about the procedure, click here and scroll near the bottom of the page: www.gerbilbreeding.com/mating.htm
