Get Ecobedding. Sand isn't suitable.

Sarah, You can use ecobedding, carefresh, aspen, wood shavings (If in the US avoid pine or cedar shavings due to oils in the wood) or any of the similar beddings for the bulk of the litter for your tank. Avoid using pure sand as it can be a pretty cold bedding, and its only good when damp for holding tunnels, it also does tand to smell up quickly (i have used it before). You can give your gerbils a sand bath, get a little dish like a ceramic cat food bowl, or a jam jar and put in some Chinchilla SAND avoid getting the DUST as it well.. is dusty and can get into their lungs. Also another thing you can use for a sand bath is cornmeal . x
