How do you tell when a Gerbil is ready to go to a new home? The lil Brown female was born 8/11 and is almost 5 weeks old so she will be ready to go when she is 5 weeks or 6 weeks? She is still so tiny though compared to the other litter that was born 8/16 she is 3/4 the size of them. But I know she is pooping and peeing on her own and drinking and eating. I haven't noticed if she is still nursing or not. I know the other two are still nursing. Is it just cause she might of been the runt? Hope you guys can. Heather can't wait to welcome this lil one into her home. Thanks Shorty

we tend to rehome pups to experianced homes at about 5 weeks, everyone else about 6-8 weeks. If you can try to let them stay with mum till they are 6 weeks of course if mum gets peaved with them you will have to seperate. I would say 6 weeks to be safe.

I would also say 6 weeks for a pup that is somewhat weaker and smaller than the rest.

Hi
My pups come away from mum at about 5 weeks. I usually keep a gerbil back a few extra weeks if it is smaller and weaker than the rest as i'd hate it to go to a new home and not be 100%. I would keep smaller pups until about 8 weeks so I can be sure.

I also seperate the pups at 5 weeks. I do this because I've had moms attack older pups, because my moms are usually pregnant and expecting the next litter in a couple of weeks, and I want them to have at least 1 wk. to fatten up and gather strength for the next set of pups. Most pups wean in the 3rd to 5th week. I've even had one litter of pups that were attacked by the mom just after they opened their eyes at 3 weeks--I put them in a tank with some slightly older pups and they did just fine by copying the older ones. They taught them to eat and drink quickly. All were fine.

I like to keep the pups in with mom until 6 weeks. There was only one litter of mine that was chased away early and that was at 5 weeks of age. I think the best thing to do is to determine whether your mom gerbil needs a break from the pups or not. If she is looking frazzled, remove them at 5 weeks. If not, I recommend 6 weeks.
