OK, to look for milk in the belly, I hold the pup on its back in my right hand with the head facing my fingers. Roll it a little to the left and look at its forward side right between the upper and lower leg. You should see a crescent-shaped loop of stomach or just a pale pink area among the rest of the darker pink abdomen. If the stomach is empty you won't see any difference between it and the surrounding area. You can grab its legs and stretch them a bit to get a better view, but it should be obvious when milk is there. If you don't see anything, put it back with the mom and try again in an hour or 2.
Sheesh I'm really going to have to make a gerbil development web page that shows this!

Here's a pic of a pup with milk in it's belly. (You can see a little white blob in the middle pup's side.
