I don't know why but I just happen to have a lot of pups right now. I have a web page and surprisingly a lot of people come here from very far away to get my pups. I also will deliver them personally if within an hour or two's drive away (gas paid for by client, of course).
I do supply pet shops if I know them well, have seen their operation, back room etc. I have a good working relationship with a couple of them in my area. I don't automatically label them evil, I think a lot of people depend on pet shops for their only source of gerbils here in Canada, and there are the good, bad and ugly.
I will now air ship to serious breeders if they get there within the same day (I don't like the gerbils' safety compromised) and I get a good rapport with them. shipping is paid by client. I know I can pack the gerbils so that they are well insulated, have adequate air, food and a water source. I keep the right to say "no." The farthest away I've had requested was, believe it or not, Nigeria, Africa! Needless to say, I said "no."
Also I have kids! They have friends, the schools get to know me, and things progress from there.
If all fails I can always sort out the pups by sex and keep them in holding tanks. I've never had to so far--they've always gone by the time they were 7 wks. old.
Having said that, though, I'm not going to do this forever. My aim is to introduce all the new colour varieties to BC, breed gerbils superior in body type, disposition and hardiness, and have some fun!
Eventually I'll keep some of my best colours and retire. Hopefully some breeders out there will keep up the good work.
PS here is a picture of the interesting litter today:
