How old are they? One week? I know that I drove my Gerbil from Maine which was about 1,000 miles. She was fine but she was also about 10 weeks old. Also, I had her secured and there was no bouncing. She was a little bit stressed and needed a few days to recouperate but she was fine.

OK I had 3 day old pups transported to me (admittedly by car) with their mum across england. They were taken to the show in the cage the were living in and then bought down to me the next day. All 7 have done really well (see img78.photobucket.com/albums/v252/MERMUM/forsalenov2004/ the slate pups) If they are properly pretected for the journey and travelling with someone trustworthy, kept warm and quiet they would be ok. BUT it is preferable to wait tillt hey are at least 5 weeks!!!

Traveling by train is possible! It might be a bit stressfull, but if you have a good transport box, with a lot of bedding, food, etc, it will be fine.
I have had to travel with my gerbils (including pups) by train thoughout the Netherlands and the north of Belgium. And also by car. The pups were all older than 5 weeks!
But how old are the pups?

For older gerbils its not an issue my gerbils travel by train every tiem we go to a show they attract a great deal of attention too from the clubber who had to have a cuddle and ended up with gerbil poo on her breasts to the rugby fans who threatened to turn them into gerbil kebabs (all in good fun though) and the charming wheelchair bound old gentleman who had never seen a gerbil before and was spellbound by them!!!
Admittedly my gerbils are bought up in a household with 5 kids and are pretty 'bombproof'.
But I wouldn't recommend transporting week old pups unless you ahve no toher choice. but you say they will travel in the tank they live in and with a good amount of bedding and careful avoidance of noisy situations it should be ok. If you hit a really busy time it will be very stressful though.
