Froma previous post you may know that i bought a male pup instead of a female pup and they have been mating. The last time i saw them mate was on the 15th november but last night they mated again does this mean that she wasnt pregnant or do they mate during pregnancy? thanx for any help ;D

Great question Pixy,
I think that they mate during pregnancy. I think that they mate all the time actually. Your gerb may not be pregnant though if she is too young. Mine did not get pregnant until she was 5 months old!!

well i got my female gerbil in july and she was about ten weeks then i think so she should be old enough. They were mating for a long time and after a while molly started to get a little irritated. But at first she was fine.

Technically, yes he is old enough. It may take a little while longer for her to get pregnant. I bet she might not be. You could separate them now and you may not have to worry about the baby thing. Is that an option for you?

pixy, why don't you seperate them? Gerbils actually don't mate when they are pregnant. So you may actually be able to split them up an not get any babies.

I havent got a divider yet though as i was going to get one a while back but then i was told that it will be ok to seperate them nearer the time of the birth so i didnt get one. The nearest time i can get one is saturday so will that be soon enough? thanx ;D

I would get the divider and split them up on Saterday. Since you continually see them mating, hopefully they haven't figured it out yet. They are young enough that there is a chance your female isn't pregnant. Please split them up on Saterday!

All the gerbils I have had (except one really late bloomer) were able to get pregnant by 8 to 12 weeks old. If they have been mating, it is most probably too late. And yes, some gerbils continue to mate just for fun, ie, all the time, not just when they are on heat. It seems to depend entirely on the gerbils' preference. But when they are on heat the mating is continuous, or nearly so, with small rest intervals and its a number of hours n duration. I have seen one young female come into heat and mate at 9 weeks, then come into heat and mate about a month later. I guess it didn't take on the first try.

I had a pair that tried for months before it took. That is why I suggest pixytwinkle split them up now. There is a small chance that this gerbil isn't pregnant, and I figure since her dad will be really mad about this, she should split them.

If you want pups, leave them though! Even if it is secretly..... just don't tell your dad! ;D

Bad, bad idea the best way to bring your dad around is prove you can be trusted deceive him and you're asking for a total lack of future cooperation if you lie. Certainly if my daughter did that her gerbils would come to live downstairs and she'd not have the care of them for a very long time. (she is 10 years old and has a colony of 3 girls. The other day she got bitten by one and apart from asking for a plaster didn't bat an eyelid. She was cuddling the same gerbil next day. I know I can trust her 100%, otherwise she wouldn't have the care of them by herself)
