Hi,
Two of my Bushy-tailed Jird girls have had litters recently and both are being fantastic mums. Lea has six pups (born 20th March) and Lina has five (born 22nd March).
Bushy-tailed Jirds are wonderful pets, but are not sit and cuddle beasties. They prefer to use their human as a tree. Mine love to whizz up my arm, sit on my shoulder for a moment, and then whizz down my arm again back into their enclosure.
Sadly Bushy-tailed Jirds are scarce in the UK, and there are very few people breeding this beautiful species. This is such a shame as they are amazing characters and can be quite long-lived. Many Bushy-tailed Jirds have been known to reach over five years of age.
Here is a pic of Lea and one of her pups that was taken yesterday afternoon.

Lovely picture of mum and pups it's such a shame there's not many breeders as they are such cute animals and i would love to own some if i was allowed. EDIT: and also would you say they were as tame/tamer than a mongolian gerbil?

Hi,
Bushy-tailed Jirds can become incredibly tame and interactive, but whereas Mongolian Gerbils will stay still for a cuddle from time to time, Bushy-tailed Jirds don't. They are more like Chipmunks in the way that they have to explore everything and need to be on the go all of the time. They make fantastic pets. They are a highly social species and are best kept in a pair or group.

The pups really are adorable and thank you for the quick response, i really do wish i was allowed more pets but it wouldn't be fair on them as i have 6 pets already and that is hard enough work. Do you breed jirds then?

Hi,
Yes - I breed Bushy-tailed Jirds and hope that more folk will eventually work with this species too. They were very popular some years ago and, as is the case with a number of jird species, seem to have gone through peaks and troughs in popularity. There are not many of them around at the moment, but hopefully that will change in the future.

Gerbils are little angels that are always there for us... we just need to be there for them too. :)

Are you going to be giving those lovely little critters away to good homes?
