there is this great little pet store where i live...they really make sure you know all about an animal before they are willing to sell it to you. i noticed that they had never had gerbils, so i was going to ask the owner if it was just that they had nobdy to supply them. (which would be a great excuse for breeding imo...sinse that would mean they would all be guaranteed a good home) so i went there today to ask...and...ugh. they had gerbils. three little agouti gerbs. i really just want to breed because i want to raise some gerbils to be super tame...if only gerbils werent such prolific breeders.
sorry this post is pointless..just me wishing i could have baby gerbils.

You can still ask them, if you can supply once a while! But make sure you can give the pups a new home, because otherwise you'll need to split the group eventually into a male and a female group, or groups, and you will end up with a lot of gerbils ;D

Hey Betty,
I agree with you. I started with 2 in June now I hae 8 gerbils and 2 pairs are breeding. I am doing a controlled breeding. I let the Mom have a litter keeping Dad in to assist her. Then the week before the next litter, I took the Dad out to prevent more litters. He is being split caged with the Mom and daughter (she's in to help raise the 2nd litter).
I wanted it for the experience. I now will try to find a vet to nueter the Dad so the Mom and Dad can be together again and I can adopt out the pups.
It is difficult to try to home them. I currently have 11 pups from 2 pairs and 1 litter on the way.
If you want the experience, I would strongly suggets breeding if you can find homes for them and are willing to put in extra money for neutering once you chose not to breed.

This is in regards to sweeties post, I thought that if you split mom and dad up and then decided to get dad neutered that it would be too late to reintroduce them? Christi

Actually Christi, I have them split caged now and they still climb the divider to try to get near each other. Bandit climbs in the other side when I have Honey munch out trying to find him. I trade sides daily so that they still recognize each other. I am sure things will go fine when I re introduce them. I will keep you posted. I just found a vet in my area that will neuter gerbils ;D. I really can't imagine splitting them up now especially since they try so hard to get near each other. Perhaps I am projecting human emotions on them, but I think it is important to keep them together after they were such great parents and so cuddly with each other. The alternative is then to keep a female and a male pup so that they won't be alone for the rest of thier lives. I am not sure that I want to do that. I already have 8 adult gerbils and I am looking to place 11 pups and have another litter on the way
