I have four new Mongolian Jirds and they are about four weeks old. I need to seperate them from the other gerbils and I cant tell weather they are male or female. If anyone could help me that would be great. Thanks

It is actually best to wait until the pups are at least 5 weeks of age. They will not be fully weaned at 4 weeks. Also, when they are 5 weeks old, they are easier to sex. Check out my webiste: www.gerbilbreeding.com/sexing.htm

Mongolian gerbils wean around 4 weeks. The following week is their 'soft skills' week. During that time their parents can teach them a lot of the little tricks of the trade of being a gerbil. Gerbils which remain with their parents till at least 5 weeks have been proven to be better socialised than those seperated at 4 weeks. I prefer nearer 6 weeks myself and also happily overlap litters. In fact Tufty has females from TWO previous litters with her and her four new pups. These girls are due for rehoming at Doncaster and there seems little point in moving them to new cages before then. (Dad was removed to prevent his impregnating Tufty again.)
