My female gerbil molly hasnt had any more gerbils yet her first litter were born on the 3rd so shouldnt she have had some more babies by now? she doest look that large either. I have split her up from the male 3 days ago and the male is extremely upset but they are still in the same tank. pixytwinkle

Pixy, it's only been 28 days. For a new mom, the gestation is 24-28 days. But for a *nursing* mom, the gestation is longer, 30-43 days. This happens because the mother delays implantation of the embryos so that the new babies aren't born before the 1st litter is weaned. My gerbil had babies after 35 days, and I think that is about average.

It's hard to say since a lot of gerbils don't show until a few days before giving birth, but I have one male gerbil who apparently isn't terribly fertile, because he never manages to get his mate pregnant right after she has her pups, so they average a couple of months between litters. Don't know if that's what's happened in your case though! Just a thought.

I wish mine delayed a bit!! . Bandit had her first litter November 17th then her second litter December 27th. Momma Bear had her first litter December 29th and her 2nd litter Jan 30th or so. Each gerbil is different. It took Momma Bear a long time to get pregnant in the first place. Also if she does not show, it is okay because they usually get *wider* only a few days before birth. Momma Bear was huge with her first litter since she had 8 and I really did not think that she was going to give birth that soon! I think it is because her second litter had only 4 babies.
