I am confused about whether it's best to keep male or females. Having read up on different sites, I am now of the opinion that males don't live together as well as females? Should I opt for a pair or is a trio ok? Also minimum size tank for them? Thanks!

Both males and females live equally well together. A pair or a trio of siblings is usually the recommended setup for gerbils as siblings are a slight bit less likely to fight in that they have grown up together. There is a rumor going around online right now that the best pairings are a male/female pairing, however if you do this, you WILL have babies. Same sex pairings work out just fine in gerbils.
Many people say the minimum tank size is 10 gallons but personally I would say a minimum of 20 gallons would be best for a pair as it gives them plenty of room to run and dig. Make sure to give them lots of deep substrate as well as they will like to tunnel through it.

I agree with giving them a lot of bedding. I am one of the few who has better luck with females and more declanning with males. Most seem to say declanning is more likely with females though. Guess my gerbils just don't fit the norm.

You aren't alone Uhura. I haven't had a single declan in this house with males or females.

I've had a lot of declanning with males and have a lot of male gerbils living alone. I've tried split tanks but after enough failed splits it is better to give them more room, bedding, and things to do (my opinion) than to keep them in boring split tanks. I do have two tanks of girls though (trio and pair) but only two females living alone. 6 males living alone.

I have not had a declan in 16 years of keeping gerbils. I have kept males and females in pairs and trios. I have had several groups of 4 males living together with no issues.
