Hello everyone, thought I'd start a new thread on vets in the West Midlands because I haven't been able to find breeders here or any information on gerbils around this area. However, there is a very good vet in my area who did a successful SGT removal for both my gerbils when they were 3+ years old, which is usually considered difficult or risky. They were very careful handling and caring for my gerbils. Their website is www.thevetcentre.co.uk/address: 207 Daventry Rd Cheylesmore Coventry CV3 5HH I assume that if they are this good with gerbils then I believe they will be good with other small pets. If anyone knows of other local vets worth recommendation around the West Midlands, don't hesitate to make a mention! Hope this was helpful to anyone looking in the area.

Oh yes I was there few years ago too for a 2year old male for a scent gland tumor eemoval. Very impressed I was! Dr Russ as I recall. Shame the west Midlands' vets are mainly good at dogs and cats. Annoying really that most of them haven't got a clue about small pets!

Try living in Cornwall, all the vets here only deal with dogs, cats, cows, sheep and horses, and look at you strange if you bring a small animal in, and so does everyone in the waiting room! They then have absolutely no clue what to do with a rodent. I DREAMMM for a good small animal vet in this area.

yes i agree with you. sometimes makes me feel as if i know much more about a gerbil then a vet (well with behaviour defo, anatomy and illnesses, not so sure) but i always have a hope that some vet might help in emergencies. BTW: i love your gerbils on the pictures, they are absolutely gorgeous!!!!!

Thanks, they're my babies I took Lola to the vet in march with a suspected RI, he had no idea what the flakes or red stuff in the corner of her eye were. I had to explain that it was porphyrin, a normal protein found in nature, and NOT blood, and that gerbils can often secrete it from their tear ducts in response to stress. He looked at me like he didn't believe me. He then just prescribed baytril to be orally fed through a needle-less syringe. I also had to take Coco in when she was a baby, she developed diarhoea soon after weaning, the vet prescribed engemycin to be put in the water bottle for a week. I knew this was wrong, and ended up syringe feeding her that too as she was off her food and water. They just told me that it's only a gerbil and they're small and likely to die, and there's nothing that they can do. Makes me angry. I think quite a lot goes into medical research and advancement in technology in the treatment of larger animals, but not so much with rodents, which is a shame. They're seen as more 'disposable' but to many people they're not any less part of the family or less loved than a cat or a dog or horse or whatever.

its sad really that you and me and other gerbil lovers try to heal their little furry friends and taking them to the doc and the vet looks like you are talking nonsense. but i agree there should be more reseach on how to help rodents, not just on bigger animals

I had to take one of my gerbils to the vets yesterday, sadly to be put to sleep but the vet was fantastic and the one I saw (Claire) is a small mammal specialist. I would highly recommend them for anyone in the Birmingham area. They have 4 branches and the biggest one, in Halesowen is open 7 days a week. They are Manor Vets (http://www.manorvets.co.uk/)

I thought I should add my vet Although its been years since I've taken gerbils, they are very good with my hamsters and were with my past gerbils. The vets adore my pets and I'm quickly building up a reputation as the crazy rodent lady A.K. Duncan vetinary practice Located in Wollaston, DY8 3PZ www.any-uk-vet.co.uk/duncan-wollaston/index.htm
