About two or three years ago, I got my first pair of gerbils. Fast forward to yesterday. It was my birthday, and I was excited to have some free time so I could spend some time with my furbabies. I've been really busy for the past week or so, and everytime I checked up on the two of them, they were sleeping. So when I opened the lid and picked up the black one, Patch, I was surprised to find he had passed on :<
It looked horrible, as if he had broken his leg and then passed on because he couldn't move to eat/drink. It was odd, because their food and drink was still changing all the same. But it broke my heart, because if I hadn't been so busy, I could have done something...
The point is, now his brother is alone. I feel bad, because I really can't get anymore gerbils, and he seems lonely. He still looks for Patch sometimes. Since he's old, I'm a bit worried. Would it be a good idea to give him a surrogate friend, such as a black cat toy? Or is that not going to work?

Hmm.
First off, I'm so sorry for the loss, especially near your birthday.
Secondly, I think if Patch is pretty old, I would just let him live out his days alone. If you can spend more time with him, that will help immensely. I'm not sure about a "surrogate friend-cat toy" option. You'll have to wait for an answer on that one, but I DO think if you dedicate more time to him, it'll be better for you both.
