I'd say mine lived about 5 maybe 6. I got them beginning of high school and still had a trio when I moved in to my apartment after 2 years of college. I found they needed a really high fat, high protein diet to have those big fat tails and stay in good condition. On typical store bought gerbil food they had thin little tails and I lost a female for reasons unknown. I switched to the homemade hamster mix my sister was feeding the dwarf hamsters she was breeding and gave them lots of insects. Every day I fed them a few wax or meal worms and every other week I dumped a dozen crickets in each cage. They'd go on a slaughtering spree and then gather them up to eat about half one day and store the rest for the next day. They really seem made to be insectivores. The rest remained healthy after the diet change except for a flea infestation that claimed a couple at around 3 years old.
