Bamboo?

I was wondering if there are any problems with bamboo, they are also fibrious like coconuts, so would this pose a problem do you think? Does anyone use bamboo in their gerbil cages? The natural tubular shape would be ideal for tunneling in I would think, and is also hard so would be fun to chew. I havn't added any bamboo to the tank yet, I wanted to hear what more experienced gerbil owners had to say about it first. Thanks for the advice!

I imagine that bamboo would be safe...I know that it's safe to chew on for most animals, and is safe for delicate animals that absorb moisture through their skin, such as dart frogs. I haven't seen any fiberous bamboo poles, so I don't know about those, but I have seen hard almost wooden ones at Garden Centers that I imagine would be fine.

Yes I have heard that too. In fact Eddie bought a very long piece of bamboo at a florists wholesalers which he planned to cut into sections for gerbil tubing. I believe it was very economical (there's a thread on GSUK). Also bamboo is very hard and apparently most gerbils are not keen on the taste so bamboo tubes are pretty long lasting.

Hmm, I wonder where I would find something like bamboo around here in the north eastern part of the US? maybe a zoo but that would be something fun and exotic to introduce.

I think you can find it at gardening centers and um....maybe design stores and stuff. It's common here, used in gardens to hold up plants or put in (ugly) brown bouquets in containers.

The bamboo was a success! They seem to love chewing on it! It's not as durable as wood, but it lasts a lot longer than cardboard. hehe.

It should be possible to get bamboo in the Netherlands, there are several types for in the garden. And maybe in some stores, for garden decoration, etc. Maybe the Gamma, Intratuin, etc. (Oh, for the non-Dutch people here: those are Dutch stores).

Yeaa some real Dutch-talk over here All this English-talk; I'm sure I have a really good mark for it when school begins again When my parents say I have to do my homework I can say; "I'm doing homework right now!" when I'm on this site I think they have bamboo in the Intratuin too, maybe I can find some more ideas for my tank there also
