I have a few Qs about sand and gerbils.
1. How do you get your gerbs to bathe in sand? Mine just sit there huddled in a bunch! 2. How do you keep them from kicking it all over the place? 3. Does age affect how much they use the sand
replies would be apreciated!

1. Some gerbils dont "bathe", but other do. Sometimes if you just put a dapple of water of their backs they may roll to dry it off. 2. You never can! 3. And nas far as I know, no, although my older pair have never had sand and only sit there eating it wile my younger three roll like mad

I use 32 ounce jars in my tanks and cages and fill them 1/4 of the way with sand, then stand them up in the corners of their tanks. I purposely leave them in there for several days as they also use these for their litter boxes after they bathe. But they can't kick the sand out of them either - so give that a try. They do bathe in them and take turns doing it before the first one leaves his mark, then rest follow, LOL! It's so much easier cleaning 9 jars every few days than 9 cages/tanks!

I don't know if this is acceptable, but my gerbils don't really 'bathe' in it much either; sometimes I'll just sprinkle a bit on their backs and they'll shake it off. I may try the water idea, though.

Sprinkling is fine too Forgot that one actually lol. Oh, and also, with my older pair, if they are particually greasy looking, I use a makeup brush (small eyeshadow brush) smooshed in the sand and wiped across them (over the cage, as they usually shake themselves). Rather like dusting a dino bone

My two eldest gerbils (mom and dad lol) never bathe in the sand, they just use it as litter. The younger ones however, roll around in it. I'm not sure but I think it was because they were from the petstore and I'm guessing they were never given sand.. Then when their babies were born and old enough to play in the playpen, i gave them sand and they knew what to do with it but the parents did not .. darn pet stores

I think it's just in the nature of a gerbil to like sandbathing or not! They're all invidual so they can't like everything like another gerbil will! My hamsters come from petstores too, and they didn't have a sand-bath there, but they get it at my place an both liked it!
