Hey everyone! I'm new to this board. I don't have any gerbils yet. Just two hamsters. I'm trying to decide if I want to get a couple of gerbils. I read that aquariums were probably the best for gerbils. But how can you make their cages fun? Do they have tank toppers? I heard that they are big chewers so wouldn't they get out of something like that? Any advice?
EDIT BY MOD: I changed the text color, because I couldn't read it.

I would suggest you go into the forum about cages and look at all the neat cage set-ups. There's so much you can do! I use a mixture of 10 gallon and 29 gallon tanks, but I have a limited space, soooo. I also have 2 bins. But go check out that forum, you'll find lots of neat stuff.

strwberrypenguin, welcome here! Tanks are the best. You can decorate them with a lot of things! Branches, houses, artificial burrows, floors, and a lot more!
I've moved this topic to the "Housing, Accessoires, Bedding, and Toys" board of this forum!

Hi Strawberrypenguin! I had hamsters too, and now I'm making a nice place to live for gerbils (wich I don't have yet too). I can tell you my plan of how to make my gerbil-palace I've got a hamstercage and an aquarium. I'm going to link them together with plastic tubes, so my gerbils can switch whenever they want. In the hamstercage I'll use woodshave, and in the tank (aquarium) a mixture of playsand, hay and twigs. The hamstercage is the feed and playing area, with two floors where they can climb to. I'm making a sandbath in it, of course a drinkbottle and a foodplace. I also have a salt/mineral block and an kalkblock with food in it to chew on. I'm going to use cardboard, wc rolls, a wooden house, material for their sleepplaces, ropes, wooden ladders, accesories of stone, etc. If you go to a petstore you can see a lot of fun thing, like little houses of stro and wood. Your gerbils will chew on it, so don't use plastic. In the petstore you can get great ideas, but mostly they are expensive. With wc rolls and balls they're also very happy, just look around in your house, I'm sure there is something simple wich you can use. In my tank I'm using also pieces of wood which I'm going to glue on it, so there are little caves. I'm also going to use rocks and stuff. Make sure your gerbils have enough place to dig in the sand, because that's what they love most. If you use 10-15 centimeters of sand mixture they kan dig a lot and make a lot of holes. You can also use things like coconuts and bamboo, just be creative I hope I helped a little bit, I'm still searching things wich I can use to make my cage fun, just like you.
