In case anyone hasn't heard of these guys (cuz I hadn't til yesterday!) I wanted to recommend them... it's a national chain animal hospital in the US - sorry everyone else! - and all of them see gerbils. The local staff at the South Hadley branch are really wonderful and it's clear they really love and respect animals. I imagine the rest of the locations are the same! www.vcahospitals.com/

I've had mixed luck with VCA, some vets know what they're talking about. Some don't. I know they usually keep an exotics vet on staff but they namely deal with reptiles/birds/turtles/snakes.
In my honest opinion. Dr Sager, in Acton Ma is the best small animals vet in the area.

I'll keep that in mind if anyone ever has serious issues; that's only about 10 minutes away from my boyfriend's house so it's an option for me even tho I'm in the middle of the state. By the way - I didn't realize Upton was so close to Lancaster! Maybe someday I will be able to adopt a pair from you, hopefully when I am living somewhere more spacious. You have beautiful little litters Do you ever take in rescues or know of any shelters between Amherst and Upton/the Worcester area that are in need of some help placing gerbils?

I have had discussions with some vets about these national chains, after what I have found out I wouldn't set foot in one of those places.

Really?? What have you heard? They're the nearest vet to me by awhile so it's easiest to go there, but if something horrible is going on I would much rather just drive farther...

Basically several vets I am familiar with have said chain vet hospitals are where you find brand new vets or those who were unable to get hired at a private vet hospitals due to skill issues, one used the term "substandard vets".
