I was just wondering, is it OK to give my 3 little girl gerbies a 'Felix 12 pack of pouches' box for them to chew? I was just wondering because the writing may be toxic. Thanks Phoebe x

Hey Phoebe, This is a really common question on this board so you might want to use the search feature and put in "cardboard." This will give you lots of suggestions and tips as to what is ok and what is not ok to give your gerbils to chew. The short answer to your question is that it should be fine because those boxes aren't much different from cereal boxes and the like (which are very popular for giving to gerbils).

It is normal to ask these questions! Just about three threads on this topic is not much, when there are over the 2500 topics and over the 20.000 posts on this forum. There are not wrong questions. You may ask them, but the search option is very helpful too. It is indeed fine to use those boxes. Other topics on cardboard can be found here: colored cardboardCradboard boxes TOXIC

What about egg cartoons. I'm not sure about these because I was reading one post and it said NOT to give them egg cartoons and then another one said TO GIVE them egg cartoons. I'm a bit stuck on this one ?? Thanks, Phoebe x

The problem with egg boxes is not the cardbaord but the eggs. As many farmed chickens carry salmonella and a large percentage of eggs, any trace of raw egg or chicken faeces on the box could carry the risk of infecting gerbils with salmonella! Therefore egg boxes carry a certain risk and are probably best not used.

I always give my gerbils egg carton boxes, but I always check to make sure there were no eggs that were broken inside. I think the egg cartons are my gerbils' favorite because it is soft and fluffy cardboard.

If you check the boxes and make sure there's no egg on it I think you can use it! I think gerbils also like to play in because there are little holes in it! To me an egg-box sounds like gerbil-fun
