Every year at pet-co they hold a hamster derby, where rodents of all kinds can race for the best time. The winner can get some pretty good prizes- can't remember if they are gift cards or rodent items of choice. Maybe both. They have two category's, one being hamsters and the others being any other rodent. Has anyone done this? I think if I could find a participating petco I might like to try, the prizes sound great and it might be really fun.

Googling it, the event looks like a roller ball derby, so your gerbil would have to be comfortable and quick in a rollerball. I would watch one first before thinking about entering. Is is noisy and crowded? Is there risk of cross-infection between species? Do you bring your own rollerball? This could be fun, or it could be really stressful on your gerbils and make them ill. So go to one first and see how the whole event is managed and how the animals there fare. Then IF it seems safe, and you are pretty sure your gerbil would handle it fine, then you can train one of your gerbils in a rollerball for the next year's derby.

I have done this in the past with my dwarf hamsters, who has since passed away. It was fun to watch! One of my hammies even managed to win a prize.

I am hoping to get the boys comfortable in the ball. I tried it with Boomer but he got freaked out because it turns out he's too small to use it right now. It is sized for a full grown gerbil and he is only 5 weeks old.
