Ok. So I have 8oz. water bottles for both of my tanks. My gerbils love to kick their stuff up into the water bottle, and they can't reach it and eventually it leaks. Why do they do this? Is it the same with the food where they like to cover up their resources? Would a smaller, higher water bottle work better?

That is always one of the problems with water! Why they do it? Maybe not even on purpose! Maybe you can create a corner of part of the cage so, that it can not be covered by bedding all the way, maybe an extra floor or shielded corner or something like that.

I've had this problem once, and I've got 5 cages! All my gerbils have to STAND to get the water, and I try to keep in in the middle of one of the sides, not in a corrner. OR, if it's in a corrner, then it's in the one right next to the wheel, and Bubba and Malcom generally keep their wheel area pretty clean so they can use it!

I had my water bottles next to the food dishes and they always liked to bury their food and consequently their water bottles as well. As soon as I moved the water bottles away from the food, problem solved!

Gerbils tend to bury their food so it won't draw predetors. The smell of food signals that the den is in use and so they try to muffle the smell of food. It might be you have your bottle too close to the food dish, it should stop once you move the food dish or the water bottle whichever is easier for you Kathy

I always make sure to place their food away from their nest and the water bottle. I'm going to get larger tanks anyway, so they will be taller.
