I'm not sure what species are even in the US any more. Mongolians, obviously, and there was somebody a while back on this forum that had found one of the larger jirds (Shaws, possibly? I don't remember if the species was ever identified), plus I'm pretty sure I've seen ads for duprasi. Bushy-Tailed Jirds are also still around, I believe.
But the smaller African species... I've never seen or heard of them in the US. Not to say they haven't been here, but they certainly haven't been popular. What with the monkeypox scare and subsequent African import ban, I don't know if there was a captive breeding population in the US, or if they've been brought in since it was lifted.
The gerbil species like Pallids and Cheesemans have always seemed more delicate to me, and less tame-- but that's just based on appearance, I've never met one in person. I prefer the bigger jirds (Shaws, Libyans, Persians), but I'm not sure they're still in the US either.

Hi I posted here a while a go looking for some help with these. I now have a trio and a pair. They are livelier than a mongoloian and in all honesty slightly madder. They always want out of their tank and love all attention, but are so fast it is diffcult to have them out on your lap/arms. Mine have the run of the hallway with all doors closed a few times a week. They do require slightly more protein, I give mine crushed insects and dried egg food along with a small seed mix that I make up for my other furries which consists of millet, oats, sunflower seeds etc etc If you are in the UK, good petshops can order them, or I will be selling some pups later in the year as we have first signs of mating so fingers crossed. I keep fancy mice too, texels, satins, siamese and tri coloured, most pet shops in the uk no longer sell mice as they are used as feeders, but a few do, If you search for fancy mice on-line you will find many home breeders. Have you considered african soft furred rats (multis), they need daily handling otherwise can get nippy but when tame make great pets, I don't reccoment breeding though as you will be over run in no time at all
