Sand

Can I use sand as bedding for my gerbils? Right now they have Carefresh, and they can't have sand baths for more than a day because they kick out all the sand, flip over the dish it was in, and chew it >.<
So, by using sand as bedding it would not only recreate their natural habitat but would also let them take baths whenever.
So is this a good idea? Thanks in advance.
(btw, the reason I want to switch to sand is because Carefresh is getting expensive, and I don't like wood shavings, even Aspen >.<)

PantherShadow, I have read that sand does't absorb urine so it will start to smell more than other bedding. It's harder to clean & is much heavier (you know, since it's made from rocks). Other than that there is nothing wrong with using it, just sharing a little insight.

Thanks, Bes. I was thinking about maybe putting a small layer of Carefresh on the top, just to absorb the urine. Nothing big though, definetly not as much as I use right now, lol.
Yeah, I knew it would be heavy... evil sand lol. I think I'll try it out for a week or so.
