I'm not accusing anyone or anything of the sort! But I just got malware from clicking on a link that someone posted in a thread on this site (it led to another site). Luckily I was able to restore my computer to 3 hours earlier and I still have everything except my pictures of my gerbils on my desktop are invisible.. which I haven't really figured out.. but I'm not complaining.
And for those of you who don't know, malware is a nasty little virus that attaches itself deep in your computer and acts like your typical anti-virus software and informs you that your computer has had a system failure. It then tells you that you have to run a scan on your computer, but as soon as you click the scan button it fully installs the malware onto your computer. The malware then hides everything from your view and tells you that you must purchase the full version to fix it. If you fall for the scam, then after you have entered your credit card information, they sell it and also they steal any information they have managed to obtain from your computer and do things with it (sell it, leak it out on the internet) -which is why its important to disconnect your computer from the internet after you have obtained any virus or malware.

It was the link on this thread. gerbilforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=behaviour&action=display&thread=24466The one that goes to gerbilsociety.com. As soon as I opened the site my anti-virus software blocked the malware but this particular malware (called S.M.A.R.T HDD) is designed to get by anti-virus softwares.. (My anti-malware software wasn't running.. wasn't aware of that at the time)

I've never gotten Malware from here, but I also use a Mac computer most of the time.
Coming from someone who doesn't know a lot about viruses- was the virus from proboards, or the link? I know (from another forum) the person who owns the gerbilsociety.com address.

It was from the link. As soon as I opened that page it was blocked.
Viruses and malware can be attached to ads. I'm not sure if it actually came from the site or from an ad on the site (not sure if that site has ads), since I can't see ads. I have my ads blocked on firefox.

Indy's Rascals is a very trustworthy site. There aren't any ads.

Perhaps you had some sort of DNS-changer malware installed on your computer? My mom had something like that installed on her computer in the early 2000's that constantly installed viruses and stored porn on her computer. Getting rid of it was a pain. Once or twice a day she'd be redirected when she clicked a link. It was always to adverts or malware or videos.
There was also that scare on monday about DNS changers collecting info off people's computers.
I'd run malwarebytes (which is free) to make sure you don't have anything lurking in the depths of your computer. I have never seen ads or anything negative on Indy's Rascals.

No, the malware I had was a simple thing designed to scam people.
I was just warning people is all. My computer is back to normal now.

Oh my! I'm so sorry you had to go through that, Abyss. I have no idea how that happened? I just gogled the site, went to the page (which I use regularly, and as crazy said, know the owner of, she is very trustworthy indeed) and copy+pasted the link from my address bar into the message and replied. I really dont understand how these things work... but i have linked to that site many times before on a number of different forums and never had any issues update: I've got Dan on the case... he's a bit of a computer genius. He's scanned the website for malware a number of times and it's come up completely clean. He's clicked on the link and seen if it activated his antivirus webshield thingy and nothing happened. I would do as Bluebert said and scan your computer using malwarebytes just in case, you don't want it happening again!!
