I just installed a finer mesh on the lid of the gerbil tank - no more gnawing for them! There are 3 sections of mesh the middle one is slightly off angle, hence the extra shiny look!

I have done the same thing a couple of years ago. My gerbils learned how to jump and make a salto to hang up-side-down on the lid and graw! Now they're not able to that that anymore. And have I far less noise!

Mine didn't have to jump - the woodshavings soon become a handy ramp for them!!

That's why I got rid of my Crittertrails. And for some reason, my gerbils don't try to jump and knaw the top bars anymore.

i have bars at the top of my tank but they cant reach it so i dont have to worry about the noise ...... yet ill have to wait and see lol
