Hi,
You may remember my "no more bar gnawing" post from a few days ago..
Well - yuesterday I noticed that ash had managed ti get her face pushed up against the finer mesh, so that she could enjoy the taste of the wires...
Later on - I spotted satin doing it too. and she was going mad on it..., I then noticed that the edges between the 3 sections were becoming rather frayed...
I had to take action and get them in their old cage in case theu started eating the mesh.... So - I put them in the playpen whilst setting the cage up - ash could obviously tell someting was happening as she was jumping out of the pen whilsty I was moving their house into the cage! It was a nightmare trying to get the lid on and keep an eye on her...
Sigh - Back to the drawing board....

You could put a little Tabasco sauce or something spicy that will discourage them from chewing like that.

Stereotypic behaviour is hard to stop! The best way is to change the situation so that they won't be able to. So using a tank or place plates, etc. in front of the bars. Bars are hard to resist for small rodents.

I would give the gerbils more to do, add more bedding, add a glass jar, a big box to chew down or even a wooden spoon or two.
The only Mesh my gerbils have is on their lids, and i've never had a problem with anyone trying to chew on it.
