I'd like to make a "2nd floor loft" in my large 30 gallon tank; is untreated pine OK, or should I buy another kind of wood like maple or oak? (ugh - so expensive.) What kind of wood are those small animal "hideouts" made of (that you find in pet stores)?
Or perhaps I should try a different material for the loft?

You know i would say use whatever you find will work, unless your gerbils have know allergies to a specific type of wood. I have gerbils with allergies (one even to aspen) and I have those "Hide Away" wooden houses for them all, and have had no problems. I have also started tossing in Wooden Spoons from the dollar store, and again no allergy or illness. If possible i would stay away from any wooden product with a very strong 'wood' smell.
When I made a two level house for a pair of my gerbils, I used Tank sealent to glue them together, it's non toxic and works well.
