well, you can add levels/shelves for them to climb on, you can add wooden chew toys (not plastic ones ), you could also add glass jars, you could add more bedding/ woodshavings (or what ever you use to fill the tank!) so that they can burrow around a bit more, maybe add a solid wheel (?) if you have room and you could also add ceramic mugs/flower pots! ;D anyone else got any ideas?

I like to also glue tp rolls together, make a pyramid for them. Or Ill take a paper towel roll and wrap bits of treats, like sunflower seeds raisins almonds cheerios, in tp and hide them inside the tubes inbetween hay. Sometimes Ill glue cereal and tissue boxes together and cut holes in certain spots and put it in there. Or fill the boxes with some tp-wrapped treats and fill the boxes with hay. you can also glue popsicles sticks together and build a box for them or a ladder for a tissue box. And ping-pong balls , they really love to kick them around and bury them. One more idea you could always just ball up some plain notebook paper and let me chase that around and chew it up. I ope some of these suggestions can help keep your sweeties entertained. I just wanted to add that you shouldnt add anything new to the tank until the pups are older and to remove anything big and heavy. So no pups can be squashed underneath it;D

Yeah i know.. The only thing in the cage rite now is a really leight food dish... a water bottle and bedding.. and one of those critter trail tubes. Im not going to add anything till the pups all are out. Just wanted to start getting things ready. I thaught you couldnt give gerbils hay?? thaught it was bad for them.??

Gerbils love hay. It's fun, it provides extra bedding, it makes woodshavings easier to dig in, provides chewing material and even provides a few extra nutrients. Do freeze it before use, it is a common source of exoparasites

yes, it's just normal hay! ;D just make sure that you freeze it in the freezer for about 3 days to get rid of any mites and nasty stuff then you defrost it (of course! hehe ) and then give it to your gerbs!

I'd be careful about a food dish, it can overturn onto a pup and trap it. I know from experience, and it is tragic when it happens. If the pups are starting to dig, go ahead and add a glass jar, it will help them not to corner dig when they are older. And add lots of cardboard stuff at that point too, it's fun for them to explore. I like to give them McDonald's drinks holders, they're perfect for gerbils!

When Ritzie's first litter was a few days old, and I was sure she was caring for them properly, I gave her the wheel back. She LOVED having it back, and she instantly quit digging in the corrners. However, I used wire ties and attached it to the lid, so that even when the pups were a little older, none of them could get to it (until their eyes started opening)

I now never haev a wheel in a tank with gerbils that are not the same size (or close to), even a high wheel is a hazzard. Soem things I use as toys in my Adults tanks are, Oil Scent burners turned upside down (great house), Glass jars, Wooden Spoons & Wooden houses (Some siliconed together), Cardboard boxes and tubes and paper plates, Levels made from metal spice racks, PVC Pipe with bends in it, slate stones (flat), And of course Hay (usually Timothy, sometimes Alfalfa). Check out your local Dollar store for fun toys, that's where I pick up mine.

I would just like to add that if you intend on keeping the pups, I would separate the males from the females so that you don't have more pups. Also it is advisable to have minimum 5 gal of space for each gerbil.
I have used rubbermaid tubs as houses. They are inexpensive and then you will be able to separate the males from females.
Do you have any pup pictures?
