I'm not meaning to sound rude, but to me it sounds like you are putting yourself and your toys over your gerbils.. as in you would rather have a Furby than be able to afford decent bedding for them.
I use aspen personally and the pine is supposed to be safe here (UK).
If you cannot find decent bedding in shops I suggest you look on the internet, there are many sites that will give you free delivery etc, and sometimes discounts on shop prices. I'll see if i can find some links.

What if you don't have a pet store anywhere? vic I'm sure you have one close by, if you have bought pets, you must have a pet store around. If they do not have a certain product ask them if they can special order it in for you, alot of places can.

You can order most stuff online. watch the postage and of coruse it may mean buying largish quantities. As I dont have a car and live on the 3rd floor I find things like sacks of food easiest to purchase this way!!!

I use corn cob bedding for both of my tanks. I've got 9 gerbils and they all love it! I only put in enough to cover the bottom of the tank, then I add all the cardboard I can, and they shred it VERY nicely. They burrow in it really well. I add stiffer cardboard (Like shoe boxes or pizza boxes, or the cardobard that comes in the new box of dishes (I just moved, so I've got lots)) and they love it! I've never seen them make burrows before like this!
What part of the US are you in? I PetSmart and PetCo both sell corn cob bedding. Often times you'll see the Kaytee brand, which I believe is called KayCob. THe PetSmart around me sells a 30-40 pound bag for I believe $23. Honestly, I get mine from a feed store local to me that I went to all the time for the horses, and he gives me a good deal... $15 for a 40 pound bag! Otherwise, the feed store 10 miles away sells 40lbs for $17

the corn cob stuff in the local pet store is unfortunately £8.99 for a 10 litre bag - a bit steep for me! but they like the carefresh and woodshavings so that's good enough for them and me ;D
