People tell me that i should use aspen bedding. that's what i've been using for a while. But i have to buy it. (When i got my gerbils my mom said i had to pay for everything, and i agreed.) But i've been broke for a cuple of weeks because i got a Furby (www.furby.com) And i'm also thikin' about perhaps getten' a bunny. So can i use pine or somthin'? Thankyou, VIC

If you live in North America you should not use Pine (or cedar) if you live in Europe you can use pine. If you cannot afford bedding for your gerbils you should not think about buying a bunny, they will cost even more..
(PS - I find Corn Cob bedding cheaper then Aspen, it's a great bedding though gerbils cannot burrow in it.)

I would have to agree with Andrea , if you cant afford to take care of your gerbils perhaps you should wait on the bunny. To make the bedding stretch alittle more you can add cereal/cracker boxes , tp/paper towel rolls , notebook paper and toilet paper for bedding along with aspen and corncob.

TBH I mostly use recycled paper-based extruded pellet (such as Good Mews) kitty litter with a bit of aspen scattered on top for extra warmth. I keep my PEW's and light-coloured gerbils on this strictly, with cardboard (they shred it up nicely) for extra warmth. It keeps staining to a minimum, and they do enjoy digging in it more than wood shavings. I find I have a lot fewer sore noses on it, too. It is very cheap, you only need a small amount initially and as it loosens up it expands and gets more fun for them to dig in.

You cant use it because of the chemicals they put it in can hurt any small animals respitory system. I like Aspen.. but im currently using Carefresh.

Hey Vic,
Pine in N America is processed with the use of chemicals. These chemicals are harmful. THe signs of harm are not always outwardly visible. It affects are mostly internal in the kidneys. Some outward signs are sore nose, skin irritation.
Aspen, Corn cob, and Good Mews are the best bets. Pine and Cedar have harmful chemicals.

What she said I use Corn Cob right now, but trully most of the bedding I have in the tanks is cardboard. I give my gerbils cardboard EVERY evening, and the tank fills it'self up quickly. Since I don't have enough cardbord to go around, i go to the dollar store and buy 50 paper plate for a Dollar, it works out real well.

Same here Andrea. I put about an inch or two of aspen/carefresh mix and then give them cereal boxes, shoeboxes, etc. It's is very good burrowing material.

I used to use Aspen & Carefresh too, but I have 2 that are allergic to Aspen, adn oen who's allergic to Care Fresh! so it's cheaper for me to buy one huge bag of Corn Cob rather then 3 small bags of each.

Hehe. One of mine is allergic to all wood, AND carefresh. But all the others are fine. Maybe I will look into the corncob thing. Right now, tank #1 has no allergic gerbils and has aspen/carefresh mix and tank #2 which has 1 allergic gerbil has shredded paper + cardboard in both. Is Corncob cheap?

It's cheaper then aspen. I buy a 40lbs bag for under $30, and it lasts me (I have 2 20g, 3 10g and a rabbit cage play pen). I have to say it's not my favorite bedding, being they cannot burrow in it. But it's easy to clean up it's dosn't seem to have any real smell to it and if you pick up a gerbil bedding dosn't come with them. And with the ton of cardbord and hay they are able to still make good nests.

I agree with the others when they say to give them a lot of cardboard etc they chew it up and the level rises quickly. Mine love the paper plates!! It is a different texture and they like the change. I also have my friends save me thier paper towel and toilet paper tubes as well as all the boxes of cereal, rice, pasta, etc.
