I've seen those for sale at Pets @home. They are housed in a huge colony in a cage the size of a small room with small trees inside for them to clamber and perch on the branches . They were large like rabbits. I didn't know what they were and looked them up. It seemed nearly impossible to give it the space it would need and the chewing ability made me fearful!
I think it's irresponsible to pass a Degu off as a Gerbil, especially in terms of the enormous needs that a Degu seems to warrant.

streetwisegerbil, at my local p@h, they keep them in pairs/trios, in a cage smaller than the rabbits' run Lovely wee animals, messier and trickier to handle than gerbils though

when we first brought JD and Smirney we looked at degus first, although they were very cute and incredibly active, fun to watch and seemed very interested in us, one even poked his nose through the cage for a stroke, after looking at the "recommended" cage i knew there was no way we could give them the space they would need. if you think what P@H "recommend" for 2-3 gerbils to live in, you can clearly imagine the housing they recommend for 2 degus i truely hope someone contacts these breeders and educate them on what they are selling and appropriate housing

On the same day, I saw two Degus in the rehoming section.
Actually, the more I think about it, I have no idea why p@h are selling them in London where space is at a premium! I suppose this was a very very large branch next to a road which takes you out of London but even so . I haven't been back there so I can't say whether they still sell them but a more local smaller branch doesn't have them.

That is just sad.. I really hope that whoever bought the degus is knowledgeable about them.
