I don't use eggshells often for gerbils so I'm not an expert. I usually use calcium carbonate sand... no preparation required. Yes, it does sink down but gerbils are expert diggers and can find what they want. We put the food for our breeding gerbils on top of their nest boxes and the sand seems to get consumed given it disappears. I just assume the other gerbils can dig up what they want. Just provide and let the gerbils help themselves to what they need. They can find their minerals in the huge wild so I assume they can find them in a considerably smaller bin or tank.

I'm just about to buy more sand and I think I'll try the carbonate. Is this right? www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Vita-Pounds-White/dp/B000YJ2Z3W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385746489&sr=8-3&keywords=calcium+carbonate+sand

I've never used the Zoo-Med Vita Sand so I looked it up and checked the reviews. Reptile owners are warned against it as the powder is so fine it gets inhaled and sticks to everything, turning pets into whatever colour the product is. I would look for plain old natural calcium carbonate sand, in the consistency of sand.

I worry about Luke's diet since he is such a bad selective eater even with me now scatter feeding. He still seems to be the one who finds all the sunny seeds and other goodies. and I figure this would be a good idea in case his calcium is off

The last bag we bought was All Living Things Premium Calcium Sand from PetSmart. I don't know that there's anything special about it. Just find something that's plain and not an overly fine powder.
Our gerbils do pick out their sunny seeds and other favourites first but we don't add more food before they have a chance to eat most of the other stuff too.
