i have a wheel in my cage which sits on the floor, and feels sturdy enough. but the other day, i went down, and one of my gerbils had knocked it over. do i need to worry about them knocking the wheel over on to them self, and possibly hurting themself? or am i just being paranoid?
thanks, pooky

Gerbils are pretty good at toppling things. If it is heavy or you have pups in the cage it toppling on somone could be an issue. I suspend my wheels from the top of tanks and cages to prevent toppling, burying and filling.

What kind of Wheel is it? I found mine would topple the all platic ones, then chew the crap out of them... so they didn't last long. Same with the silent spinner, but the darn thing broke pretty quick so I didn't have to worry about it for to long. If you can attach them to the lid or side of the tank that would be best to stop them from trapping gerbils when they fall over. I use the metal mesh ones and find sicne they have a bottom on each side to sterdy them, they don't usually fall over. If they do they can be easily attached to the side.

my wheel is called a "run around, regular size." i will see if i can find some wire or something to suspend them from the side. thanks for your ideas.
