I see this forum is kind of zombified but I hope to lend my help to anyone who may be searching for qualified small animal/exotic doctors in the Southgate/Downriver(MI) area.
My highest recommendations go to Doctor Keith Cook and the staff at Southgate Animal Hospital. Everyone has been wonderfully kind, helpful, and knowledgeable about the needs of small animals and exotic pets. One of the things I find very prevalent with prior vets was that I would be cut off before finishing an explanation of the situation or treated as if I they didn't need to give me the time of day or respect as a pet owner. Prior vets that saw my cats felt somewhat rough with my pets and did not treat them with real kindness.
Dr.Cook was patient, helpful, and treated my family as individual people, not just an annoying voice in the ear that signed his paycheck. He was very good with my gerbil and displayed professional behavior with handling him. At no time did I ever feel concerned for how my pet would be in his care.
Feeling respect and true caring from a veterinarian changed the entire atmosphere of what was a horrible accident. I trusted the staff entirely and they did not let me down. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are further away then the prior vet I took my cat too (and does not take exotics) but I will take all of my pets, big and small, to Southgate Animal Hospital in the future.
Somethings to keep in mind are that they charge $50 for the initial examination of your pet that does not cover what they may possibly need in terms of medicine or further medical care. It is $30 for follow up visits.
Despite being a higher cost to take all of my pets there I will still do so in the future. The care and attention is higher then anywhere else I've ever been.
Here is the information for the Southgate Animal Hospital:
