For about about a month I rotated my water bottles because I needed new ones and the ones I like are kind of expensive. They got used to this, they were on a drinking schedule along with a feeding schedule. I'd switch the water bottles twice a day and they'd come out and drink and eat at the same time. They also had fruit to help keep hydrated. So anyway, fast forward to this week where everyone now has a water bottle in their tank. ALL THEY DO NOW IS DIG AT THE STUPID THINGS and attempt to climb them! They slam it against the glass, make an annoying digging noise. I tried taping it but it ends up getting chewed and then loosened from all the digging.. They have MORE than enough in their tanks, this is NOT a boredom issue. This is a *new thing in tank* issue. They keep this up I'm going to end up making them use water bowls. (obviously safe/secure ones that they can't bury or tip)

It's 1:30am.. It sounds like hell in here. Wheels and cardboard chewing and scratching are fine.. But not this water bottle slamming bs. Yep, nobody has water bottles tonight and that's when they should have them the most since I keep the heat so high.

Mine bang other stuff besides their water bottles against the glass. Take whatever is making the noise out until you wake up, then give it back.

two solutions for you. #1 hang the bottles high enough that they can only reach the spout, not the bottle itself. #2 bumper pad the bottles with a few rounds of duct tape.
Also it sounds like your gerbs are situated in a bedroom. I suggest an alternate room in your place. Gerbils are active and noisy rodents normally, which gerbil lovers think actually adds to their charm (I hate having a lazy, sleepy hamster). My gerbils (I have over 40) are in the laundry room where they can bang chew and scratch away to their hearts' content. Lots of people keep them in the bathroom or living room. Generally bedrooms and gerbils do not mix, unless you are a really sound sleeper.

Some great ideas!! I would however be cautious of the duck tape. If you notice that the gerbies are chewing on i, you might need to remove it. The glue may not be very healthy for them.

I have a "Water Bottle Distroyer" named Chevy. I just lift the bottle higher in the tank. If he's still really buggging me i'll add more carbord or hay for him to be busy with. I'm moving in a week, so the gerbils will then have there own room! (WOO HOO)

Heh. My 5 gerbils are in my room and I have become totally acustomed to cardboard chewing, drinking, scratching, you name it. The only thing I take out at night are the wheels. And i replace them with cardboard. I'm pretty used to all that noise. I also find if you continually play with your gerbils at the same time everyday they will start to turn there inner clock to those play times, which usually has them sleeping the same time as you We're going to be neighbours in a week! And you are always invited to my gerbil room! Though it won't be as full as your is

It's not because they're bored. THey have a ton of stuff to do. I think it's just because it's something new and they're not used to it in the tanks 24/7 anymore. It's like they think it's some kind of new tunnel they'll be able to dig up.
It's funny. I switched some of my water botltes to the kind that have the spout straight down. So now there's a few that still continue to dig up it and the spout is hitting them in their head soaking their head. They have a huge wet spot constantly on top of their head and they don't care! They still do it!
I tried velcroing it and taping it but it's not working. The noice is so irritating. I don't have a problem with gerbil noise, wheeles, cardboard scratching doesn't bother me. This noise is different. I switched some of the tanks to water dishes. Theyre all getting switched to those. And no, they're not on the bottom where they can be burried nor are they big enough to drown in.

LOL well maybe you're not a gerbil person. Perhaps some sleepy grumpy hamsters would be a better pet for you. This is a part of their personalities--among other habits!
I think I've seen someone here wire a water/food bowl higher up the tank, so it doesn't get stuff in it. Or you can put it on top of something else, I guess.
One thing I do is use a plastic bin, and drill a hole in the side of the bin for the water spout to stick through. I hang it on the outside where they can't get to it. The only problem is then sometimes they bury the spout!

I second all the suggestions. Gerbils will be gerbils No need for name calling though!

It is not thier fault they just enjoy making noise. I am so used to noise know that I just sleep through it. Try sharing your room with ; A tank of gerbils A hamster Two fish tanks with noisy filters And two snakes (the least noisy) And then you would not be complaining.
