Here's a link I found to a scientific study on mongolian gerbils who were supplemented with high doses of vitamin c, which is found in citrus fruits like oranges. This seemed to reduce the incidence of gastric cancers. Vitamin c also drastically reduced the bacteria helicobacter pylori in the guts of gerbils which is well known to cause ulcers and other gastric problems. lists.isb.sdnpk.org/pipermail/health-list-old/1997-November/000630.htmlI just wanted to share this with you all, maybe it is helpful!

Vitamin C sure did not hurt Gerbils... sometimes I would give mine a piece of fresh orange ... and let me tell you.. they enjoyed it a lot!!!.. I had to give each one a piece or they would fight... but not too often... the first time I gave them a piece.. will I gave it to "mindy" who lost two of her front teeth!!.. poor baby.. she could not eat properly... so by looking around for something soft... I gave her some orange.. and she loved it.. it was not as consistant as her food.. but at least.. it put something in her belly... oh!!. and Peanut Butter !!!..

When I read the article, I couldn't help but thought of gerbils (and mice, rats, hamsters etc) being used in laboratory experiments. Sad...

It's indeed sad. Most rodent pets have their origin in laboratories, sadly enough.
