my ruby eye is probably around three months old..when i got him, i noticed he rocked from side to side when his eyes were open and found that this was common with light eyed gerbils due to vision problems...the last two days, however, he hardly opens his eyes at all and tho he is still running around and eating and drinking, he seems to not be able to see at all and is a lot more cautious..is this possible in such a short amount of time? is this normal? could it be maybe an eye infection? if anyone has any advice or experience, please respond..i'm quite worried for him

I'm not sure what it is but it doesn't sound normal. What bedding are you on right now, because it could be an allergy to the bedding. If it's not the bedding you may want to try calling the vet and explaining the symptoms. Some vets are really great and will tell you if the illness is treatable, and if there are home remedies.

Try rubbing a small warm damp unscented tissue over there eyes and they should open them soon Good Luck! [glow=red,2,300]PiffTheGerbL[/glow]

Do you have his cage in a brightly lit room or area ? Although what he is doing,is not normal and does need investigating, burrowing animals do not really like brightly lit conditions, and,if he is a bit light sensitive, may just be keeping his eyes shut as the conditions are too bright for him. Is there any discharge or anything ?

when hi eyes where open did he respond to light and moveent around him? I have a gerbil who has never fully opned his eyes, although he can do so. He is totally blind and therefore has no need to. It casues him no problem except he cannot have sand baths as theh sand irritates his eyes because he does not blink Having said that if your gerbil WAS sighted it might be best ot see a vet a small discharge should be expected in this situation BUT a large discharge means an infection Dan is just blind, pure and simple, but I really think a vet shoudl confirm what is happening to yours (as mine did for Dan) good luck
