I just got Simon and Olaf set up in the split tank tonight and they're doing pretty well! They're curious of each other, but no negative interactions so far. Olaf even made a nest next to the mesh! I spy a leaping gerbil... I always say that Olaf is part monkey My dad and I wanted to build a really sturdy, high quality removable divide so that it can be reused and the tank can also be used without it if need be in the future. We bought some 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth, 2 sizes of aluminum channels, and silicone aquarium sealant and it took about 2 hours to complete (not including drying time). Here's a video on how we did it www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LCgTcEoJJA&feature=youtu.be

Nice video - that's a very well constructed divider! Cutting the ends of the aluminum channels at a 45 degree angle looks nice and produces much stronger joints.
If you don't have a dremel, the aluminum channel can be cut with a hand held hacksaw and a miter box - it's pretty soft and easy to cut. Using the dremel is a lot faster, though!

Thank you! Yes, of course there are many other ways to do it. I just wanted to share exactly how we did it, and anyone is free to make their own twist on it
