Hi everyone, I may need some help, please. Yesterday I was playing with my two girls and I saw a cayenne tick climbing on the side of their tank. I looked around and found another one. I didn't panic or anything because my doggie girl Luna was hanging around the tank earlier and she is being treated for ticks, but still I washed the tank, changed the bedding and went to take a look at the girls. Problem is, my girls were rescued from a laboratory and they get _really_ nervous when I pick them up. So they usually become a gerbil-twister on my hands and I couldn't look properly. I didn't felt any ticks on their fur but Fay have a strange dark brown patch on her belly about the size of a pea. It looks rough, but not infected. She is not scratching herself and they both seem healthy, but I couldn't look at the patch properly because she doesn't let me. So I have two questions: 1) If they do have ticks, can I use Frontline to treat them? If yes, how much? If not, what kind of medicine I can get them? I would take them to a vet but I live in Brazil and here gerbils are generally just snake food or test subjects, there isn't a single vet on my town that knows how to treat gerbils :/ 2) Is there something I could give them to sedate them a little so I could look properly for mites and that brown spot on Fay's belly? They don't even need to black out completely, just get a little groggy so I can hold them with their bellies up for more then 2.4 seconds -.- I though about giving them valeriana root because it's natural but haven't found anything about that on the internet.

Ps: I think the dark patch on Fay's belly might be her scent gland (like I said, they never let me hold them for long so I never looked before). Thing is, if it was meant to be orange/pink, then there is something definitely wrong

I'm sorry I can't answer your first question, but I am almost positive the patch is her scent gland. If it is brown and rough that is probably most definitely it. Maybe you should just try not picking them up for a little bit and just put your hand in the cage so they can come up and sniff and maybe put some treats in your hand. Eventually they'll be less skittish when you pick them up hope this helps a bit and goodluck!
